Our Purpose - WHY NOW?
Brain and Mental Health are at a watershed moment.
Forecasting trends in our fast-evolving global economy, are now being recalibrated from the repercussions of the pandemic that has challenged every aspect of human life. The lived experience and the tragic human costs have overnight strengthened the quest for preventative health.
Remarkable scientific advances in vaccines and new solutions that might otherwise still be waiting their turn have been fast-tracked to powerful and positive effect.
That said – a slower, more insidious pandemic on the horizon that attacks aging populations, is already here.
- Worldwide some 47 million people have Alzheimer’s Disease or related dementia
- Set to increase to 75 million by 2030 and progress to 131 million by 2050
- Global costs estimated to be USD 605 billion or approx. 1% of the world’s GDP
To address these issues, the Global BHP BrainTrust was launched in 2020 in Switzerland by acknowledged and influential women leaders from government, civil society, business and philanthropy with a view toward catalyzing progress in the area of women’s brain health. It is positioned differently from other initiatives owing to its’ membership, field of influence and international representation.
We aspire to become a trusted advisor to policy and decision makers in order to catalyze the scientific, healthcare and institutional expertise necessary to demonstrate and valorize the benefits of investing in women’s brain health.
Three core objectives are foreseen as the foundation for this:
- Achieve greater awareness and understanding of the role of prevention in cognition and brain health.
- Catalyze new public and private funding for gender-based research into brain health.
- Establish sustainable multi-sector partnerships and programmes focused on facilitating women’s brain health.
