WELCOME: GLOBAL BHP BRAINTRUST
A Message from Andrea Pfeifer, Chair of the Global BHP BrainTrust

Is the world ready to fulfill its promises on dementia by 2031?

Just as the 78th World Health Assembly concluded in Geneva at the end of May, we are seeing a renewed momentum in the global response to dementia. Eight years ago, in 2017, all 194 WHO Member States united to adopt the Global Action Plan on the Public Health Response. 2025 now stands as a milestone year in that journey.

Since then, we’ve seen encouraging progress: the number of national dementia plans has risen from 39 to 45 in just the past year 2024, with an increase to 53 in May 2025 showing a clear sign of growing international commitment.

Yet, as the latest “From Plan to Impact VIII” report by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) reveals, significant challenges remain. Stigma persists and without urgent action, the number of people affected is projected to increase to 139 million by 2050.

That’s why we admire ADI’s tireless advocacy in securing the extension of the Global Action Plan until 2031, an important win for further progress. As the report notes, this extension is an opportunity to live up to the commitments of the plan. Through our own initiatives like the FINGER Plus for Women study and broader awareness efforts, we aim to contribute meaningfully to this next phase of progress, ensuring that prevention becomes possible.
